Electronic registration for voters in PNG planned for next election

The Papua New Guinea Government is to establish a biometric registration system of all citizens ahead the next scheduled elections in 2017.

The NBC reposts the Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, Charles Abel, saying an electronic biometric ID system will create an accurate database, from which the electoral roll can be generated.

Mr Abel says this will also help other statistical collection, including the national census.

The PNG electoral roll has long been plagued by the inclusion of ghost names while the names of many legitimate voters have been left off.
