Rota residents suffering from week long power interruption

3:42 pm on 19 September 2012

Up to 600 residents on the island of Rota in the Northern Marianas have been suffering from a week-long power interruption and the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation has yet to explain why.

Affected residents and business owners say they are worried about the impact of the outages on their livelihoods as well as possible damage to appliances.

The outages have mostly occurred in the morning while children were preparing for school and workers getting ready for work, and have lasted from one to three hours.

The power failures are understood to be a result of old and dilapidated insulators that need to be replaced and recent heavy rain.
