Petition stops early voters in American Samoa from voting for governor

1:26 pm on 14 September 2012

Since Monday people casting absentee ballots in American Samoa for the local and federal elections, have not been able to vote for the gubernatorial team of their choice.

That's because candidates, Save Liuato and Tofoitaufa Sandra King Young, are challenging the eligibility of four others in the race; Lolo Letalu Moliga, Dr. Salu Hunkin Finau, Le'i Sonny Thompson and Taufetee John Faumuina Jr.

Their challenge has been filed as a petition with the High Court asking for a review of an earlier denial of their claim by the Chief Election Officer.

A spokesman for the Election Office said ballot forms for the governor's race cannot be printed until the court makes a decision on the petition.
