A Fiji businessman, Benjamin Padarath, has been charged with attempting to stow away, after being found hiding inside an overseas vessel at Lautoka's Queens Wharf.

Mr Padarath was one of the civilians alleged to have been tortured by a select group of soldiers, who operate under the commander himself.

He is currently before the court, charged with one count of giving false information to a public servant.

Fiji Village reports he was found wearing a Ports Authority uniform.

The Police Director of Operations, Rusiate Tudravu, says Mr Padarath was also found with about 1,600 US dollars in cash, chocolates, biscuits and water.

He is expected to appear in the Lautoka Magistrates Court.

The overseas vessel was on its way to New Caledonia and Australia.
