Uncertainty over election result in PNG's Imbonggu Open

7:34 pm on 24 July 2012

There is uncertainty over who has won the Imbonggu Open seat in Papua New Guinea's general election after two candidates were declared the winner within a day.

PNG's Electoral Commission has confirmed that it is seeking legal advice on whether to declare the poll in the Southern Highlands seat a failed election.

Francis Awesa of the People's National Congress party was declared winner yesterday.

However today, the returning officer nullified that result today and awarded the seat to independent candidate, Pila Ninigi.

A spokesman for the Commission says that a number of the ballot boxes for the seat were disputed and that the returning officer defied an order from the Commission to not include the disputed ballots in the count.
