Saulala quits Tonga government a day after appointment

It has been revealed that a Tongan minister resigned last Monday - just a day after he was appointed.

Radio Tonga says the people's representative of Tongatapu Seven, Sangster Saulala, was made the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Food last Sunday as the government was faced with a motion of no confidence.

However, Mr Saulala says he submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, a day later.

He says his decision to resign was because of too much pressure over the motion.

Radio Tonga says the government is trying to woo a member or two of the people's representatives to cross the floor to stay in power.

A vote was put off at the beginning of the week to give the government 14 days to prepare its arguments against the vote.
