A union representing backpackers in Fiji says it hopes a new agreement between the Ministry of Tourism and the police will lead to better customer service for visitors.
The Ministry and the police recently signed a memorandum of understanding centering on security measures for tourists at backpacker hostels.
The President of the Fiji Independent Travellers and Backpackers Association, Tui Kabu, says under the agreement accommodation providers will have to be licenced and pay the required taxes and levies.
"Basically the idea is to provide a better service for the industry and reduce the incidents of tourists probably being mistreated or having some sort of issue. It's just basically trying to increase awareness of the operators and the industry as a whole."
Tui Kabu says he hopes the MOU will lead to more visitors staying at backpacker hotels.
