Fiji acting PM sees mixup in Carr question about military role

Fiji's Acting Prime Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says Australia's foreign minister, Bob Carr, must have confused Fiji with Burma during a recent meeting in Suva with the Forum Ministerial Contact Group.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says he was asked by Mr Carr whether there will be seats reserved in parliament for the military in the election planned for 2014.

He has told FBC News that this shows a lack of awareness of the reality in Fiji.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also says this demonstrates reliance on conjecture, rumour, blogs and listening to one or two people who propagate misinformation for their personal agenda.

Two months ago, the military commander and interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, said he was considering standing in 2014, adding that should he line up, he expected to win.

He didn't say if such a move meant that he would set up a new political party to contest the polls.
