American Samoa Flag Day dedicated to Togiola

12:55 pm on 11 April 2012

American Samoa's biggest holiday, the annual Flag Day celebrations on April the 17th are to be dedicated to Governor Togiola Tulafono.

This will be his last Flag Day celebrations as he is barred by the American Samoa constitution from running again after serving two consecutive terms as the territory's chief executive.

The Flag Day celebration commemorates the first raising of the United States flag after the chiefs of Tutuila and Aunuu ceded their islands to the US in 1900.

The King of Manu'a, ceded the Manu'a islands to the US four years later.
