PNG Coalition continues to push for immediate revocation of controversial law

Papua New Guinea's Community Coalition Against Corruption is continuing to push for the immediate revocation of the Judicial Conduct Law.

The NGO says it welcomes the Prime Minister's undertaking to defer the implementation of the law, saying it shows he's listening to those who've expressed concern about it.

The government has indicated that the bill might be put aside for nine months, but the Coalition says a very basic worry remains - namely that the law, as it stands, can be used by Parliament to remove judges immediately.

It says for this reason it should be repealed immediately.

The Coalition says if there are grounds for tighter laws on judicial conduct, then these matters can be referred to the Constitutional Law Reform Commission which should consult widely, including with judges, constitutional office holders, and the public at large, before making any recommendation.
