End-of-year target for Tokelau's renewable energy scheme

The new Ulu or leader of Tokelau says he thinks his country will still manage to be the first in the world to meet all of its electricity needs with renewable energy.

Last year the previous Ulu, Foua Toloa, said that Tokelau intended to reach that goal in July.

But Keli Hiano Kalolo says he thinks the solar installations that will supply more than 90 percent of Tokelau's power will be running by the end of the year.

He says the ground has been cleared and construction is set to begin.

"I think in the next few months because we've already transported part of the panels to Tokelau through the boat St Theresa just last month."

Keli Hiano Kalolo says Tokeluans are doing most of the work with support from a New Zealand company.

The New Zealand aid programme is paying for the installation.
