The United Nations has stressed the Needs Assessment Mission team being sent to Fiji ahead of the planned 2014 elections will be politically neutral and unbiased.

Fiji's ambassador to the UN Peter Thompson says the team will provide an objective technical need assessment for the country to conduct free and fair elections.

Fiji Village online says the mission is slated to take place early next month.

It will provide technical assessment of Fiji's needs, such as ballot boxes, staffing and logistical preparation, among other considerations.

Meanwhile, Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says consultations on the country's next constitution will commence this month.

Commodore Bainimarama says this is going according to the plan set out in the government's roadmap to democracy.
