Travel mishaps after Samoa's time zone switch

4:06 pm on 4 January 2012

Reports from Pago Pago say last week's move by Samoa to switch time zones has caused some airline passengers to miss flights.

Staff at Polynesian Airlines' office in American Samoa say there have been at least ten cases of people turning up at the airport on the wrong date or way past the check-in time for flights.

Last week, Samoa moved a day ahead of American Samoa.

A senior employee says the mix-up is happening mainly to local residents returning from Apia after the holidays.

He says all passengers were told when they made their reservations or bought tickets of Samoa's dateline change but some forgot and therefore missed their flights.

Others were also not aware that Samoa is an hour ahead of American Samoa between September and April.
