Vanuatu blocks scrapping of WWII tank

1:26 pm on 21 December 2011

The Vanuatu Cultural Centre has given a South Korean scrap metal dealer three weeks to return a World War Two tank to a site at Tanoliu in North Efate.

The director of the center, Marcelin Ambong, says the man had paid a local man 96 US dollars to remove the military relic.

But Mr Ambong says the tank is protected by an agreement between the Vanuatu and United States governments.

He says they think the South Korean man intends to recycle the metal in the tank.
