French Polynesia call for Maohi Nui Accords

6:40 am on 23 November 2011

A senior French Polynesian assembly member says a new blueprint is needed to govern the territory and its relationship with France.

Hiro Tefaarere says France should be involved in drawing up what he calls the Maohi Nui Accords.

Walter Zweifel reports.

"In an outline sent to the assembly, Mr Tefaarere says such a review is needed because after 40 years of what he calls economic doping through the nuclear weapons testing regime, the territory has been in decline. Mr Tefaarere says since 2007, there has been a drop in all areas, resulting in 10,000 jobs being lost and unemployment rising to about 25 percent. He says a new approach to economic, social and cultural development is required over a 10 to 15 year period to harness the people's talents and resources."
