Papua New Guinea police has its first woman traffic motorcycle officer after Constable Ester Kende graduated from a ten-week training course alongside ten male officers.

The course was the initiative of Inspector Gideon Ikumu who says there's a need for police on motorbikes to patrol the increasingly congested streets of Port Moresby.

He says the increase in motor vehicle imports is causing traffic congestion around the city during peaks hours.

He says road accidents are becoming a major problem and the presence of police on motorcycles can help reduce this.
