The French authorities say a new prison in French Polynesia will be ready by 2016.

A senior official has visited Tahiti to talk about setting up the new jail in Papeari in rural Tahiti.

This comes as the Nuutania jail continues to be the most crowded prison run by France.

It has 61 places but more than 250 inmates.
