Fiji briefs diplomats about election preparations

6:04 pm on 21 September 2011

The Fiji interim government has briefed diplomats in Suva on its preparations for planned elections in three years.

The interim Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and the Solicitor General, Christopher Pryde, outlined what they've done to date to implement electoral reforms.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says the diplomats got an insight into the work being done developing a new constitution and the various time lines.

He says the European Union's report into the 2006 election showed major flaws, such as the failure to register all eligible voters.

He says this meant that a number of voters were disenfranchised in a fifth of polling stations observed.
