80 percent voter turn out expected in Tonga by-election

2:39 pm on 14 September 2011

Election officials in Tonga are expecting an 80 percent voter turnout in a by-election to choose a new Tongatapu 9 People's Representative to parliament.

Nine polling stations will be available tomorrow on Tongatapu and one polling station in the outer island groups of Vava'u, Ha'apai, 'Eua and the Niuas.

The by-election is to select a replacement for Kaveinga Fa'anunu who passed away in July.

The Superviser of Elections Pita Vuki says about 2,900 people are registered in Tongatapu 9 to vote for the six male candidates.

"In the last elections we had last year was about 90 percent turnout. I hope that we'll get about the same percentage of turnout tomorrow but usually in by-elections there are a bit lower turnout than the general elections."

Polls will be open between 9am and 4pm local time.
