Samoa to pursue police for abusing Nigerian man

5:39 pm on 7 September 2011

Samoa's assistant police commissioner has vowed the officers involved in the assault and inhuman treatment of a Nigerian man will be brought to justice.

William Okoro has been awarded more than 50,000 US dollars in damages after he brought a lawsuit in the Supreme Court.

The court upheld Mr Okoro's claim that he was assaulted, arrested and detained illegally, which violated his human rights.

The assistant commissioner, Leaupepe Fatu Pula, says the police professional standards unit will investigate and report back on the officers implicated.
