American Samoa House to look at census count

The American Samoa House of Representatives has scheduled a hearing to discuss the 2010 population count for American Samoa.

Questions have been raised about the accuracy of the census.

The census puts the territory's population at 55,519, a 3.1% drop from 2000.

But representative Larry Sanitoa says he has serious reservations about the accuracy of the count and is worried about the impact the drop could have on US assistance for American Samoa.

Representative Vailiuama Steve Leasiolagi, who once worked at the Department of Commerce, the agency in charge of the census, says a similar situation occurred years ago and a recount was done to correct the numbers.
