Indefinite alcohol ban declared on New Caledonia's Mare island

1:32 pm on 1 September 2011

The French authorities in New Caledonia have declared an indefinite alcohol ban on the island of Mare with immediate effect.

The high commission in Noumea says the sale and transport of alcohol was prohibited immediately after last month's clashes near the island's airport in which four people were shot dead and more than 20 others wounded.

The ban was eased at the beginning of this week but the high commission says several incidents have occurred since related to the excessive consumption of alcohol.

The authorities have appealed to the public and customary leaders to help the island return to normal.

There have been several arrests in connection with the killings as investigations continue.
