Samoa cabinet considers audit report into utility

1:18 pm on 1 September 2011

The Samoa government's chief auditor has given cabinet a report investigating alleged abuse of public assets at the Electric Power Corporation.

The allegations had earlier prompted cabinet to suspend two senior staff members at the corporation.

The Minister responsible for the EPC, Manu'alesagalala Enokati Posala, has not been available for comment beyond informing the media the report is now before cabinet.

Our Samoa correspondent says it's understood the report recommends criminal charges be laid against the suspended staff members.

The report also raised allegations of abuse of power in deals between the corporation and some big businesses over the payment of overdue power bills, as well as meter tampering.
