Sport: Big guns win easy as New Caledonia suprise in 7s

10:25 am on 1 September 2011

There were big wins for Samoa and Fiji on day one of the men's rugby sevens event in Noumea.

Defending champions Fiji scored six first half tries in a 52-0 drubbing of Wallis and Futuna while traditional rivals Samoa were equally routine in a 55-0 rout of American Samoa.

Despite the convincing win, Samoa coach Stephen Betham still felt his side made to many simple errors.

"We had a few lapses and we can't afford to do that when we come up against the likes of PNG, Fiji and Niue. Just minimising our mistakes as much as we can. Not only that - trying to blood a few new players in and see if they can handle the pressure."

Papua New Guinea were equally convincing in a 41-0 shutout of Tuvalu while, in front of a noisy home crowd, hosts New Caledonia upset Niue 17-12.

The day's other winners were Solomon Islands against Vanuatu and Tokelau over Tahiti.

Pool matches continue today with finals day tomorrow.
