An American man avoided serious injury this week when his yacht snapped free from its mooring and hit the reef off Palmerston Island in the southern Cook Islands.

The man had on stopped off at Palmerston during a voyage from the US to Australia.

The 13-metre vessel is thought to have snapped its anchor in rough weather, pushing it onto the reef surrounding the atoll.

The badly damaged vessel remains stuck on the reef.
