The Samoa Rugby Union says it wants assurances that improved safety measures have been put in place for referees before resuming it's services in American Samoa.
Samoan referee Ponifasio Vasa was punched and kicked as he was explaining a decision to the Nuuuli team during their match against Avele at the weekend.
He is still recovering in hospital in Pago Pago and was interviewed by officers from the Criminal Investigations Division on Tuesday local time.
The American Samoa Rugby Union will decide on Wednesday local time what penalty will be imposed for the assault and the Chief Executive of the Samoa Rugby Union, Sua Peter Schuster, says there also needs to be improved security measures for referees.
"That no spectators can be able to access the field and should have security or policemen at the grounds and to ensure those who have caused the recent problems, or any other similar incident before, are banned from watching the game. Also to make sure that the coaches of both teams - especially the management - are fully aware of the consequences or ramifications towards themselves and also the club."
Sua Peter Schuster says it's hoped Mr Vasa will be able to return to Samoa in the next couple of days.
