Tonga MP, Kaveinga Fa'anunu, died on Sunday after struggling with illness since before last year's election.
Mr Fa'anunu won the rural Tongatapu Number 9 seat in the country's historic elections in November.
He was a member of the Friendly Islands Democratic Party, and party leader Akilisi Pohiva, says they weren't made aware of Mr Fa'anunu's condition until after the poll.
"Parliament voted to allow him, to allow Parliament to pay his medical expenses in New Zealand. And he went to New Zealand for almost a month and he came back and it came to a point where we found out that there's no, no chance."
Matangi Tonga reports that Mr Fa'anunu died of cancer and says his funeral is on Wednesday.
