6:15 pm on 29 June 2011

Australia is stepping up its aid for basic education in Solomon Islands.

The parliamentary secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Richard Marles, says Australia's providing an additional six million dollars over 18 months for teacher training, improving early grade literacy and numeracy and teaching resources.

He says access to quality education and training for the growing number of young people in the Solomons is essential to ensure economic growth and stability and reduce poverty.

Mr Marles says additional resources are needed to ensure young people are ready for employment opportunities.
