Fiji revamp creates sugar ministry

1:32 pm on 29 June 2011

The Fiji Sugar Ministry has been made into a stand-alone ministry amid efforts to reform and revitalise the industry.

It has previously been part of the Ministry of Provincial development, multi-ethnic affairs, disaster management and sugar; and the ministries of agriculture, finance and the Prime Minister's Office.

The Permanent Secretary of Sugar, Manasa Vaniqi, says the ministry has been established in Lautoka to put more focus on addressing key issues and revamping the sugar industry.

"We would initially be responsible for coordinating entities; there are a number of stakeholders that already exist in the industry itself. And now it is only felt that government should come in on a stronger position to coordinated and liaise on all the activities of these major entities within the sugar industry."
