A Samoa MP is calling for the restoration of the headquarters of the Mau movement, which was instrumental in establishing Samoa's political independence from New Zealand.
The MP for Faleata East, Aveau Niko Palamo, whose village Vaimoso housed the headquarters, says it should be restored with funds from the Tourism Authority or the National Museum.
Talamua Online says not only will it be a tourist attraction, but also have significant historical and educational value.
The Mau movement was based at Vaimoso village and paramount chief, Tupua Tamasese Lealofi the 3rd, was one of a number of Samoans shot dead by New Zealand troops during a peaceful demonstration in 1929.
Next year is the country's 50th anniversary of independence and the restoration of the Mau headquarters is being suggested as one of the significant events that could mark the year.
