The chief of staff of the wife of American Samoa's governor is alleged to have been the drunk drive driver in a crash in Malaeimi early last Saturday morning.

Toleafoa Kathryn Tupua is believed to have been the driver of the black Government House 4Runner, in which her husband Tupua Roy Fua was the only passenger, and she is reported to have been intoxicated.

The Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety, Leseiau Laumoli, has confirmed the accident and says it's possible that Toleafoa was the driver.

Both Toleafoa and her husband are officers of the First Lady's Ta'ita'itama Program which campaigns against under age drinking.

Toleafoa underwent emergency surgery on Saturday and is still in the surgical ward.

The Department of Public Safety has impounded the car, which is described as a total loss.
