Niue electoral petition dismissed

Niue High Court judge Wilson Isaac has dismissed a electoral petition challenging the winner of the Makefu village seat in last month's general election.

Tofua Puletama, who got 15 votes to the 16 won by the victor, Salilo Tongia, had challenged the residential qualifications of two of the voters.

He contended they should have been on the Namukulu village roll.

Mr Puletama had also challenged a ruling by the Niue Public Service Commission that overturned a decision by the Chief Electoral Office to keep the two voters on the Namukulu roll.

The Niue Confidential website reports the judge saying Mr Puletama could seek a judicial review of the commission's decision.
