Delay to plans in Niue to bulldoze homes

9:54 am on 30 May 2011

There has been a delay in Niue government plans to bulldoze derelict homes.

More than 65 houses were listed to be condemned and demolished by the High Court under the island's health regulations.

But the online newsite, Niue Confidential says there has been opposition to the government requests.

The Court has now indicated it will not hear any applications for demolition until there is evidence of ownership and proof of condition of the house.

It is understood a small number of owners have consented to demolition but the majority will require evidence from the Health Department as indicated by the Court.
