1:35 pm on 24 May 2011

Vanuatu's Minister of Finance Moana Kalosil Carcasses says he's checking on claims a baby died as a result of being held up by police searching Luganville's wharf on Friday.

The police had been searching the premises of the Northern Islands Stevedoring Company Limited, which the government's accused of misusing funds.

The search warrant was issued as a result of a complaint brought by the Minister.

The President of Penama province which owns part of NISCOL says police acted like the company was harbouring a bomb or terrorists and says the sick baby was delayed in getting to hospital by the extensive search.

Mr Carcasses who's in Santo says he doesn't believe the claims.

"I have met yesterday with the commandant of the police reposnsible for the northern area. He didn't say anything about this. So we are going to check and the government will make a statement accordingly."
