American Samoa wary of Samoa time zone switch

6:50 pm on 12 May 2011

People in American Samoa are wondering what impact Samoa's time change will have on their ability to take holidays.

Samoa sits to the east of the international dateline, but from next year it will shift so it is on on the same day as New Zealand and Australia.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago, Monica Miller, says that will make it more difficult for people to travel to Apia, without having to take time off work.

"For the average person, they are saying, hey, how many other things is the Prime Minister going to change that would set Samoa and American Samoa further apart? And there's also people who say we haven't experienced it yet, maybe there is some good to it. There's also business people who travel back and forth, and with the move by many businesses from here to establish there, maybe there is some good to come out of it, but for the average person, I think it will take some getting used to."
