Niue still aiming to make use of idle fish plant - premier

The caretaker premier of Niue says the country still has plans to make use of a huge fish plant that's been unused for the past four years.

The multi million dollar plant was built by the Reef Group but it pulled out after failing to get additional financial help from the Niue government.

Toke Talagi, who is driving a major tourism development on the island in conjunction with the New Zealand government, says the fish plant is not a white elephant, at least not yet.

He says the island faces challenges in trying to exploit its exclusive economic zone but there are parties interested in the plant.

"But we haven't found the solution as yet. I don't believe that we should call that a white elephant until we have decided finally whether we are going to scratch anything to do with fishing or fisheries on the island, and that is not the case at the present moment."
