Fiji to appoint new judges following resignations

9:13 am on 19 April 2011

Seven magistrates are expected to be appointed into Fiji's judicial system.

Fiji's interim Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, told Fiji Live, one is Australian; one is a New Zealander while the rest are locals.

The new appointments follow the resignation of three Sri-Lankan magistrates who cited personal reasons for leaving their positions.

The three are Pamila Ratnayak, Kaweendra Nanayakara and Lakmal Wickramasooriya.

Fiji reappointed a new judiciary in 2009 after the military regime abolished the constitution and sacked all judges following a ruling that it was in power illegally.
