French Polynesia ruling party to boycott no confidence session

4:00 pm on 30 March 2011

French Polynesia's ruling To Tatou Aia Party says it will boycott the assembly sitting called to vote on a no confidence motion aimd at ousting it from power.

The party has the support of only nine of the assembly's 57 members while the opposition side is split mainly over whether to seek the territory's reinscription on the UN decolonisation list.

The To Tatou Aia Party, led by Gaston Tong Sang, says it will attend the debate of the motion but stay away from the vote on it.

The pro-independence Union For Democracy has been in talks with possible backers of its motion but observers say it remains uncertain that the party can secure 29 votes, the minimum needed for a majority.
