MSG wants Fiji to rejoin regional trade talks

1:29 pm on 30 March 2011

The Melanesian Spearhead Group has reiterated its call for Fiji's inclusion in the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations Plus negotiations.

Fiji has been excluded from the process as part of Pacific Islands Forum sanctions over the Fiji military reneging to return power to an elected governemnt in 2009.

But at the MSG meeting under way in Suva, Papua New Guinea's foreign minister, Don Polye, said Fiji must be included in all economic meetings.

Mr Polye has told the Fiji Times that one of the strategies that PNG has pushed was for constant dialogue with Fiji.

In distancing himself from the Forum stance on the value of democracy, Mr Polye says what Fiji does internally is Fiji's business.
