Two minutes silence for Christchurch quake victims

2:31 pm on 1 March 2011

Two minutes of silence have been observed throughout New Zealand for the victims of last Tuesday's earthquake in Christchurch.

Cathedral bells tolled at 12.51 - the time the deadly quake struck a week ago.

The search and rescue work that is still going on in Christchurch came to a halt

The Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, Victoria Matthews, offered a prayer moments before silence descended.

The Police have updated the death toll in the quake to 154.

They say the number of missing, which is likely to include most of those bodies have been recovered, is still fluctuating.

But they say a number around 240 is now expected.

Civil Defence says water is back on to two-thirds of Christchurch and 120,000 tonnes of silt has been shifted from roads and properties.
