Samoa company mystified by government body's uranium claim

Samoa's biggest private employer, Yazaki Samoa, says it's suprised to hear that a government report claims the company imported depleted uranium.

The ministry of natural resources and environment report from last December shows Yazaki had imported banned depleted uranium ten years ago.

Yazaki makes wire harnessing for motor vehicles and its general manager, Fune Feai Oliver-Vaai, says the report has come as a surprise.

He says he's not aware of the company ever importing such material.

"A bit disappointed in that if they have actually written such a thing we would definitely want to know about it or be informed about it."

The government report also says there's a need for more cooperation between the environment ministry and the customs department to avoid the importation of banned substances.
