The Vanuatu Council of Ministers has approved more than 800-thousand US dollars in funding for relief supplies to the five islands of Tafea province.

The province was severely hit by Cyclone Vania last month, along with El Nino weather conditions and the eruption of the Yasur Volcano last year.

The National Disaster Management Office director Job Esau says the money will pay for food and the distribution of emergency supplies to the most affected areas of the province.

People on the island of Tanna made a demand for relief supplies last year, but the government hadn't responded until this week.

Last year cases of diarrhoea and asthma were reported on Tanna following the emission of toxic gas and ashes by the Yasur volcano.
