Police in Samoa are investigating an alleged prisoner's beating on New Years Day.

The alleged attack by a prison warden took place reportedly in front of other inmates at the main Tafa'igata prison.

Our correspondent in Apia, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says the family of the prisoner sought help from Victim Support and want to find out what happened.

"The family is calling on police for an immediate inquiry and police are now saying that they are looking into the matter because the prisoner had received serious injuries to his face. 12"

But the police are denying the reports, saying the prisoner was not seriously injured as reported and several family members were sent to Tafaigata prison to prove this.
