Case against Pitcairn mayor adjourned

6:45 pm on 16 December 2010

The lawyer representing the mayor of Pitcairn Island, who is charged with possessing child pornography, says the case has been adjourned as he plans to challenge the independence of the Pitcairn court system.

Mike Warren faces 25 charges of possessing indecent images of children on his computer, which was seized by police several months ago.

His Lawyer, Tony Ellis, says during a preliminary hearing by video conference today, the case was adjourned until May without Mr Warren entering a plea.

Mr Ellis says the Pitcairn Supreme and Magistrate's courts don't present his client with a fair system.

"As essentially the Chief Justice or any judge of the Supreme Court may direct the magistrate what to do. So the argument will be neither the Magistrate's court nor the Supreme court is an independent court."

Tony Ellis says Mike Warren was re-elected Mayor of Pitcairn this week despite the island's inhabitants knowing he had been charged.
