US Secretary of State in American Samoa for less than an hour

7:06 am on 8 November 2010

The United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, will taste a cup of ava, a ceremonial drink concocted from the roots of the kava plant when she arrives in American Samoa tonight.

The exact time of arrival has not been released by the Governor's Office, which is citing security reasons, but it's believed that Mrs Clinton's plane will touching down late tonight.

Monica Miller reports from Pago Pago

"The ava ceremony, which is the traditional welcoming of the highest honour accorded to visitors is usually held during the day. Miss American Samoa Cindy Silao will prepare the ava which will be served to Mrs Clinton by a tattoed man. The ava ceremony will be held in the Governor's VIP lounge which yesterday got a check over by the Governor Togiola Tulafono. Last evening staff of Pago Pago International Airport were wrapping poles of the Samoan fale at the airport with coconut leaves and flowers. Mrs Clinton is expected to be here for less than one hour, just long enough for her aircraft to refuel. This is Clinton's second stop over in American Samoa. She also landed here two years ago to refuel but never left her aircraft."
