The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the management of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands have had no comment following a suggestion by the Prime Minister that RAMSI could depart in five or six years.

According to the Solomon Star, the newly elected Prime Minister Danny Philip says he hopes the country can stand alone within five years.

RAMSI was deployed to Solomon Islands in 2003 in response to a request by Honiara for a regional intervention force to reverse a decline in law and order.

There has been no timetable for the RAMSI deployment.

Contributors to the operation have said RAMSI will stay for as long as necessary.
