The Tuvalu Parliament has chosen Maatia Toafa as the new Prime Minister.

Mr Toafa won the secret ballot with eight votes to seven against the other contender Kausea Natano.

The country held its general election two weeks ago with five new MPs joining ten sitting members.

The secretary to the Government Panapasi Nelesoni says Maatia Toafa already held the post between August 2004 and 2006.

"He was Prime Minister before the previous one, Apisai Ielemia. But in the last Parliament he was a member of Parliament also."

Panapasi Nelesoni says preparations are under way for a first Cabinet meeting today and a special parliamentary session tomorrow.

He says a date is yet to be set to appoint a new Speaker and a special parliamentary session to allow the new MPs to take their oath of allegiance.
