Micronesian leaders attending the Pacific Islands Forum in Vanuatu say they are on a clean energy drive on their islands.
The presidents of Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia have launched the Green Energy Micronesia Initiative.
The FSM's Emmanuel Mori says that the islands are especially vulnerable to energy price fluctuations and their energy needs command more of their resources than their national budgets can afford.
And Palau's President, Johnson Toribiong, says their goals include achieving 20 percent of power generation through renewable energy by 2020 and general improved energy efficiency.
"We have distributed and have exchanged 20,000 combat fluorescent light bulbs to our citizens in exchange for their ordinary lightbulbs. We have improved efficiency, in the procurement of fuel efficient generators. We have strengthened education and awareness among our people of conserve energy."
