The heir to a banking dynasty is calling on Sydneysiders to help celebrate the arrival of his boat made of plastic bottles, the Plastiki, when it sails into Sydney Harbour this afternoon.
The catamaran made of 12,500 plastic bottles will end an epic four month voyage from San Francisco to raise awareness about plastic waste in oceans.
The vessel, skippered by 31-year-old adventurer David De Rothschild, heir to the US Rothschild family banking fortune, has attracted worldwide attention since it set sail on March 21st.
The Plastiki and her crew will be greeted at Darling Harbour by US Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, and the deputy Sydney mayor Phillip Black.
Mr De Rothschild has been supported by six crew members who have alternated over the four-month journey, as the boat stopped in various locations, including New Caledonia and Kiribati.
