Sugarcane Growers Council welcomes renewal of land leases

The Sugarcane Growers Council has welcomed the decision of the government to seek the renewal of land leases for 99 years.

Currently land is leased for thirty years.

Fiji Village reports the Council's Chief Executive, Sundresh Chetty as saying the move will instill confidence in the cane growing community.

He says longer leases mean growers will be very happy to invest in their farms which will secure the long term viability of the sugar industry in Fiji.

Chetty says the government has emphasised the importance of the sugar industry, and has been giving assistance to the growers for cane development and upgrading of cane access roads.
